Shiva and Parvati from Andhra Pradesh,
circa 11th century CE. Bronze, 16”
This one is missing the figure of Skanda, their
son, synonymous with Kumara or Murugan as he is
known in TN. These sculptures are known as Soma
Skanda. This Sanskrit expression literally means
Shiva with Uma and Skanda. Skanda is always
shown as an infant or child. Ganesha their
other son is never shown in this particular
style of depiction.

Both Devanagari
and Telugu scripts are derived from
Brahmi (as are most scripts in the
Indian subcontinent) probably the oldest
historical phonetic, syllabic script
devised by the human species. The name
Brahmi (consort of Brahma) is synonymous
with that of our guardian deity
the Goddess Saraswati and may be an
indication that it was developed along
the banks of the river Saraswati. For
some pictures of early Brahmi
manuscripts see for instance the section

Introduction
The Indic Studies Foundation,
based in the San Francisco Bay
Area, seeks to propagate a more
accurate and rational approach to
the study and dissemination of the
Indian Civilizational ethos in the
world, particularly in the United
States and India. While India
regards herself as a
Civilizational Power, the image that
India evokes is far removed from
that of the Indics as they see
themselves

Since we may use Sanskrit from time

. Our first suggestion would be to
visit the
glossary of
Indic and S'krit terms
for context sensitive meanings and
then if you cannot find the
word or phrase, to go to the
dictionaries.

We are adding a
lot more buttons on the navigational
panel at the top, left hand side and
bottom of the page. For
instance, we have added new buttons
on Famine during the British
colonial era. Famine stalked the
land every 3 or 4
years and was particularly virulent
after the British crown took over
the administration of the vast
subcontinent. According to
official figures 26 million people
died of hunger and starvation
between the years 1876 -1904.
We will have an investigative report
on Famine in India, before the end
of this quarter.

Some Planned Projects
Investigate the misdating of Indian
Chronology beginning with Sir William
Jones, MaxMueller and others
"Caste (as we experience it today in
India) is neither an unchanged survival
of ancient India nor a single system
that reflects a core cultural value.
Rather than a basic expression of Indian
tradition, caste is a modern phenomenon
– the product of a concrete historical
encounter between India and British
colonial rule " Nicholas Dirks
Propagate the truth that the current
social phenomenon under the general
rubric of Caste is not autochthonous to
the subcontinent. It is a system that
was fostered, embellished and nurtured
extensively by the British Colonial
Power , so that what goes by Caste today
has no relationship to any Hindu core
cultural value or ancient
tradition.

The Wheel of Konarak
The Sun temple of Konarak, also
known as Black Pagoda, is the
crowning glory of the temple
architecture of ancient Orissa.
Built in A.D. 1250, during the reign
of the Eastern Ganga King
Narasimhadeva - I, centuries of myth
and legend shroud its history. The
design is the celestial chariot of
the Sun God pulled by seven
exquisitely carved ornamented
horses, strained on twelve wheels on
either side.
The huge monolithic wheels represent
time, unity, completeness, justice,
perfection and movement and each
wheel stands for a fortnight
and each horse a day of the week.
